Glimpses From Home: Poetry of Short Film | Nov 7th - 22nd

We will examine the art of the narrative short film and embrace an art practice of personal storytelling, empathetic observation, and poetic visual expression. Over the course of this workshop, participants will arrive with a selection of ideas for narrative shorts, develop one idea into a full draft of a short film screenplay and begin to ruminate on the visualization and execution of the short film. 

In our sessions, we will study selected short films and other artworks; hold interactive exercises for the development of character, story, and visual language; and explore expansive and disruptive story structures.

Participants will also share their writing and participate in group feedback discussions. (You should enter this workshop with a basic understanding of screenplay formatting and software.) 

Everyone leaves this workshop with a draft of a short film that further develops their voice as an artist and storyteller.

November 7th, 8th, 15th, 22nd
2 pm - 4 pm CST

Payment options include sliding scale or payment plan with 50% deposit upon registration.
Payment plan is only available for $100+ orders.

Workshop Mentor

K. Xian Ming Yu (they/them) is a transfemme non-binary filmmaker from Queens, NY. K. is a 2026 Sundance Trans Possibilities Fellow. They received the 2025 NewFest/Netflix New Voices Filmmaker Grant and were a 2024 Film at Lincoln Center Artist Academy Fellow.

Their latest short film ”i saw you in the flood”, premiered at SXSW 2026 and their previous short “Yú Cì (Fish Bones),” premiered at SXSW 2025. Both films were supported by the UFO Short Film Lab. K. is committed to telling stories that start empathetic conversations across generations within immigrant communities.

7+ days before: Full refund of tuition.

Less than 7 days before: no refund. You can pass your spot to another person. Please contact us and share their contact info.

Instead of a refund, students may apply tuition toward another course in the same calendar year.

Where do workshops take place?

All workshops take place virtual through Google Meets. You will receive a link and additional information one week prior to the first session. Participants need access to a computer with camera and microphone.
