The Spaces Between: Rhythm, Time and Intuition in the Edit | Dec 5th - 13th

This workshop approaches editing as a creative and intuitive practice, encouraging participants to move beyond rigid rules and to develop a sense of confidence in their own artistic instincts.

Through guided exercises, screenings, discussion and hands-on editing, we'll explore rhythm, pacing and point-of-view as creative tools, as well as practical editing strategies. Workshop sessions will prompt participants to ask themselves questions like: what is already inherent in my footage? How do I want to shape my story and how can I use timing and rhythm to infuse the material?

Between sessions, participants will create short observational footage of their own to edit throughout the workshop, allowing them to experiment with multiple editorial approaches as a group. The facilitator will be using Premiere, but the concepts and strategies covered in the workshop sessions can be used in any editing platform.

4 Virtual Sessions
December 5th, 6th, 12th, 13th
3 pm - 5 pm CST

Participants must have access to an editing software (Avid, Premiere, Davinci, or iMovie) and experience with editing. This workshop is not intended to teach how to use editing softwares.

Payment options include sliding scale or payment plan with 50% deposit upon registration.
Payment plan is only available for $100+ orders.

Workshop Facilitator

Gisell Calderón is a multidisciplinary artist and filmmaker based in southern Minnesota. Her film and photo work resists straightforward narrative in favor of layered, sensory experience, all while examining geopolitical memory and cultural inheritance. She has collaborated with a number of MN filmmakers in filming and editing community-rooted media and programming. In addition to her artistic practice, she is the current Technical Director for Carleton College's Cinema and Media Studies department, where she teaches production techniques, consults emerging filmmakers and oversees the department's production facilities.

Gisell's work has been supported by the MN State Arts Board and Metropolitan Regional Arts Council. She brings both technical expertise and artist's perspective to the editing process, encouraging artists to develop workflows that support experimentation and intuitive storytelling.

What is the refund policy?

7+ days before: Full refund of tuition.

Less than 7 days before: no refund. You can pass your spot to another person. Please contact us and share their contact info.

Instead of a refund, students may apply tuition toward another course in the same calendar year.

1 Where do workshops take place?

All workshops take place virtual through Google Meets. You will receive a link and additional information one week prior to the first session. Participants need access to a computer with camera and microphone.

Can anyone participate in the workshops?

Our workshops are affinity spaces for Black, Indigenous, and people of color 18 years old or older.
